2018 is looming and most of us can’t help but want nothing more than to get the jump on it. The annual downtime that sets in come the end of the year gives us time to assess the 365 days that have passed. The average person has a measly 14 days of annual leave, so we’ve identified 10 times to pull out that backpack, hop on a flight and take an extended trip (far) away from the office.

#1. Chinese Lunar New Year (16 & 17 Feb)

Holiday: Friday & Saturday

Leave Supply: 14 days

Leave to take: 1 day, Monday (19 Feb)

What you get: 4 days

 

We’re skipping New Year’s Eve and Day (2017/2018) because it’s a little too late for that… unless you’re in desperate need of some last minute travel. But wait till February and carve out some long weekend travelling for yourself.

#2. Good Friday (30 Mar)

Holiday: Friday

Leave Supply: 13 days

Leave to take: 1 day, Monday (2 April)

What you get: 4 days

 

Good Friday is great simply because it’ll always give you a long weekend. To make it sweeter, take Monday off and trade your office wear for your backpack and a quick getaway.

#3. Labour Day (1 May)

Holiday: Tuesday

Leave Supply: 12 days

Leave to take: 1 day, Monday (30 April)

What you get: 4 days

 

Just before the halfway mark of every year, we the weary workers are gifted a day for some respite. Commemorate Labour Day by doing some budget travelling. Avoid the Monday blues and return to the office refreshed and with three days left for that work week.

#4. Vesak Day (29 May)

Holiday: Tuesday

Leave Supply: 11 days

Leave to take: 1 day, Monday (28 May)

What you get: 4 days

 

Skip all the Mondays. That’s the underlying theme of 2018. Another long weekend for you, another opportunity for a spontaneous travelling.

#5. Hari Raya Puasa (15 Jun)

Holiday: Friday

Leave Supply: 10 days

Leave to take: 1 day, Monday (18 June)

What you get: 4 days

 

You’re past the halfway mark of 2018, and if you follow our guide to a T, this will be your fifth trip for the year. In any direction, we’re able to explore a seemingly endless number of cultures and destinations, so don’t worry about being “bored”.

#7. Hari Raya Haji (22 Aug)

What you get: 5 days

 

You get five full days away this time so make the most of it! A chance to venture a little further or to soak up the vacation vibes of your destination a little longer.

 

#8. Diwali/Deepavali (6 Nov)

Leave to take: 1 day, Monday (5 November)

What you get: 4 days

 

The tail end of 2018 — you’ve still got a fair bit of leave left and (hopefully) some great travel memories to share.

#9. Christmas Eve & Day(24 & 25 Dec)

 

Holiday: Monday & Tuesday

Leave to take: 0.5 day, Monday (24 December)

What you get: 4 days

 

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The year is winding down and most people will have their mind on anything else besides work. Assuming you don’t work for horrible bosses, you’ll get half the day off on the eve of both holidays in December.

So take half a day off and give yourself the gift of a mystery trip. ;)

What to do with that half a day you have? Use it a week later! Wrap 2018 up and start 2019 on the right foot — travelling.
 

2018 Forecasted Leave Balance: 4 days
